Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) is a controversial unconventional energy source that involved injecting high volumes of Fracking Fluids into underground shale seams. This fractures the rocks releasing methane.
Many countries and states have bans or moratoriums on Fracking due to the environmental damage it causes. In the United States, where fracking has been going on for several years under the guises of an ‘environmentally friendly’ solution to the country’s energy problems, there has been massive pollution of underground aquifers, toxic chemical evaporating from storage tanks, air pollution from the gases released by the franking and in some state so much methane has entered the water supply that residents can set fire to their tap water! Fracking in Lancashire has been halted after it was linked to earthquakes in the area.
Global energy companies are now eyeing up Scotland’s shale beds. Greenpark Energy already has permits allowing it to start Fracking in Dumfries and Galloway. Even taking into account the exaggerated claims of the size of the reserves there is only likely to be enough gas released by this expensive and energy intensive process to last a couple of years. If the billions that will be needed to build the fracking infrastructure across the Scotland were invested in green renewable energy resources Scotland could be provided with sustainable energy sources for decades to come.
FRACK OFF Scotland is part of a global campaign to halt fracking as well as other unconvential gas sources such as Coal Bed Methane and Underground Coal Gasification.
